I was in Sam's Club the other day and I saw Rick Warren's The Purpose of Christmas. Have any of you read this? Is it something worth picking up?
Also it reminded me that one of my 2008 books I wanted to read was A Purpose Driven Life, which I also have not read! Darn those resolutions!!
I haven't read anything of Rick Warren's so I was wondering if you had any thoughts on him or his books!
Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti
I haven't read his books either.
But when I first read the post I thought you said you had run in to Rick at Sam's!
1I've not read any of his books, either, but I do have A Purpose Driven Life sitting on my bookshelf at home!
2That would have been so funny! Except I wouldn't be able to pick him out if he were standing right next to me!
I love Sam's Club but we don't have one, there is one in my hometown though so my mom took me. There's something really satisfying about buying in bulk!
3We have Costco. Never been though.
4Never been to Costco?? OMG - I live in that place!!!
5Well we've lived here for four months now, and we really just don't need things in bulk because one- our place is TINY and no storage, and two- it's just me and hubby.
6Costco is way better than Sam's, they even sell clothes there, designer stuff!
7I have Rick Warren's book, PDL. I read about 1/4 of it. It was a little hard for me to get into, although I understand his messages are good. I think at the time I just needed little daily doses, and his book was more of a long term read. You know how sometimes you need a daily devotional and sometimes you need something to throw yourself into for a longer time? That's how I felt about it.
8Same with me Sy. I would totally go to Sam's or Costco, but it's just lil ol me and I don't have any room for all that stuff!
9i've read his purpose driven life book, and my bible study read through purpose driven church...i've heard about the new christmas one and i'm interested in reading it...i think he's great and has a pretty amazing way of getting his points across. Also, as a side note- he spoke at my sister's college graduation in may!
10I know about the storage issue - I have a big old house, and I am running out of room for all my bulk stuff! LOL!
11I have read the PDL and it is definitely worth reading. He does a good job of putting our lives in perspective. It's not about us - it's about God.
As for Costco - well, it rocks! The books are normally about $13 or $14 for hardcovers which is a substantial savings. That alone is probably not worth the yearly fee, but it's my favorite part. Oh, they also sell two $25 Caribou cards for $40 and 5 $20 Starbucks cards for $80. Woohoo.
12LOL Brendel, I just bought those Starbucks gift cards there this weekend - perfect gifts for the holidays!
Now, I am going to get the
13oops, on a laptop with a hyper-sensitive mouse!
14I was saying I was going to get the PDL off the shelf it has been sitting on for the past year or so and actually read it! Thanks for the recommendation!
Yeah, that would be an awesome gift, but I fear I would just keep them for myself! I love Starbucks skinny cinnamon dulce latte. I bought the syrup from them the other week and have been attempting my own at home, but it's never quite as good.
15I go there every morning before work and get the exact same thing: Grande London Fog with two pumps of vanilla and a croissant heated up! The see me pull into the parking lot and have it made for me by the time I get to the register!
16Oh, and you are right - it isn't nearly as good when you make it yourself, is it??
17I have never heard of a London Fog. What is it? I think coffee made by someone else just tastes better and stays hotter. Plus, it's just fun interacting with the people behind the counter. It becomes a ritual.
18A London Fog is an earl grey tea with steamed milk. I always add two pumps of vanilla for some sweetness. I have the entire staff now addicted to them! LOL! I adore the people at the Starbuck near my work they are so nice and friendly. It is a nice way to start my day!
19Oh, that sounds really good. And tea is so good for a person. I will have to try it. I will do the sugar free vanilla, though.
20Let me know what you think, once you try it, ok? I am intrigued by the cinnamon dulce latte now. I may try that over the weekend! I will let you know what I think....
You know what I would REALLY like?? One of those cupcakes haus makes! Dang, they look sooooo good! I can't wait for her to change her avi so I can see her latest creation!!
21Yes, I'll let you know and I would love to hear if you like the cinnamon dulce. I think Starbucks does a really good job with their sugar free syrups.
Yes, Haus needs to start shipping out those cupcakes. They look too pretty to eat, though.
22You are right, they do look too good to eat! I want to commission her for my son's birthday party in February! Do you think she would come out to Seattle to make a bunch of cupcakes???
23I've only heard of Costco from you ladies here... We do have a Sam's Club though.
I haven't read any of his books. They're on the bookshelf though...
24laura, maybe we can all have a new year's resolution to read the PDL together and talk about it as we go!!
25Possibly!
26Late to the discussion, but I think that sounds like a great idea!
It may be sufficient motivation to keep me on track with actually reading a book.
Embarrassingly, I get so busy that when I finally sit down to read, I nod off over it.

Laine, I do the same thing! Or, I find that although I am "reading", I am not really retaining any of it!
28I always fall asleep when I read. Sucks when it comes time to study..
29I love to read at night before bed, but yes, I probably am not retaining the last few pages before I drift off into sleep.
I saw the Purpose of Christmas and that looked interesting. Maybe I should have gotten it.
30Very late into the discussion....
I read Purpose Driven Life, and our church did the "40 days of Purpose" that corresponds to it. The theology is off (Warren's), but the premise is good. I don't know that I would read it if I hadn't been in charge of a small group (I almost didn't read it anyway).
31Dave, what do you mean by the "theology is off"?? Can you give examples?
32Unfortunately, it's been long enough that I don't remember particulars, and I don't have the book with me at work. It's just a difference in what our belief systems are, which is the difference between Lutherans (me) and Baptists (Warren).
33Oh, thanks for clarifying that, Dave - that makes sense!
34Rick Warren has been my husband's pastor for over 9 years. I left my church when we married and went to his and I have not regretted that decision.
His books are co-wrote by his wife. Some people have trouble getting past the religious part of the his books and see ho funny he is. He is an average man which speaks on an average -people level. He is non-judgemental and honest.
I am not one to attempt to convert someone else to ANYTHING however, if anyone is seriously interested in checking him out all you have to do is google "Saddleback Church" in Saddleback California or his name.
You can even see today's sermon online.
35Is anyone still interested in doing a book club reading of PDL together???

Martini I am!! Thats on my book list to read this year, I'd love to have a buddy!! I'm sure we could get a group together....
Any other takers??
37I've read it. Do you want/need a moderator?
38Yes, let's get a group together, Haus! That would be so fun!
Dave, yes, do join us!

We could just do it right in this group right??
40I think that would be ok....let's ask Sy, since it is her group!
Sy, is it ok if we do our reading group for PDL here???
41Fine with me!!!
42Sy have you read PDL?
43Nope.
I'm not sure if I'll participate though. I've read so many Christian books that I'm pretty much on overkill at this point. I'm going back to the basics and reading the Bible.
But I might change my mind! And I'd love to keep up with what you guys are learning.
44Ok, so shall we say that we will star the PDL the first of March? That gives everyone time to get their hands on it...and gives me time to go on vacation!
Leaving for San Diego on Saturday for a week!! Hurray!!!
45Ok sounds good! Does it come with some sort of reading guide? Dave?? Do you know?
46There is a thoughts and question section at the end of each day...but I don't have a reading guide...
47I've been wondering about this, too! I bought the book when this topic came up originally, while I was Christmas shopping, but have only scanned the first chapter.
It's supposed to be one (short) chapter per day, IIRC.
There's a journal or workbook, too. Dave, is that worth picking up, or will the questions in the book (and maybe a notebook) serve the same purpose?

The should be used in conjunction with the "40 Days of Purpose" program. The book study I led when my church did that program just went off the questions in the back of the book. It's pretty easy reading, and I'm looking forward to the discussions.
49Can we move this to the first of April?
I'm going to be out of town for two weeks in march.
I hate to be bratty but would that be ok with everyone??
